Assuming no repeats, there are 5 ways to fill slot A, 4 ways to fill slot B, 3 ways to fill slot C, etc etc, until you reach 1 way to fill slot E
So you have these 5 slots ABCDE that need to be filled with cards
how many ways total are there to fill them?

you would multiply out each number, so 5*4*3*2*1 each number represents the number of choices available for each slot (eg: 2 represents 2 ways to fill slot D)
