FDR over reacted to the Depression and actually lengthened it. But in so doing, it gave him the excuse to expand the role of government. He came up with lots of programs to use taxpayer money to employ people. The Social Security system started under FDR. The US had worked it's way out of bank failures and depressions many times before. But Roosevelt was able to convince people that the only way out was for the government to provide a net in case you fall, even though we didn't need one before.
