jamal writes the letters K-A-N-S-A-S on cards and then places the cards in a hat. what are the odds against picking an S? 1:2 2:1 2:6 6:2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2:6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2:4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's quite easy kansas has 2's and kansas has 6 letters so it's 2/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here we go again...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just answered one of these but i was wrong. so i need practice too. I was doing probablility instead of odds. apparently there is a difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go figure. i was wwrong. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at the risk of repeating myself ... odds are not probability! it is the number of S's to the number of not S's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

satelite73 haa

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so although it is quite easy, it is not \(\frac{1}{3}\) it is \(2:4\) better known as \(1:2\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is 2:4???!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i messed this up because i didn't read carefully either it says "odds AGAINST"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

moral of the story read the problem carefully "what are the odds against picking an S?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4:2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ratio of number of not S's to number of S's is \(4:2\) or \(2:1\) odds against are two to one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, \(4:2\) but you reduce and say \(2:1\) or in english "two to one"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think we must have confused @Alex_berry
