Species richness and relative abundance? Please help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A forest habitat contains a great deal of plant and animal life. Using the forest habitat as a model, explain the difference between species richness and relative abundance. Discuss how each affects the survival and fitness of populations. This is the question.

This is what I have so far.Species richness refers to the number of species in a community or habitat. Relative abundance refers to the number of individuals of a given species as a percentage of all of the individuals in the community or habitat. Since both species richness and relative abundance are components of species diversity, increasing species richness or increasing evenness (making the relative abundances of species more equal) increases species diversity.

I don't know how to use the forest habitat and talk about survival and fitness.
