In the nitrogen cycle, Nitrogen gas is converted to ammonia by bacteria, which is converted to nitrite, then the nitrite is again converted to nitrate, which is absorbed by plant roots. Then in denitrification, the plant dies and releases Nitrogen back into the atmosphere.
