OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

I understand everything except for the garden part.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

How do I find the area of the garden?

OpenStudy (ranga):

Area of a triangle = 1/2 * base * height

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

The formula is base x height รท

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

2

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

but like the problem is I don't know which one is the base and which one is the height.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

Also i'm not sure about the second triangle, the big one

OpenStudy (ranga):

It can be either in a right triangle and it would not matter.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Add the area of rectangle and the area of the big triangle and subtract the area of the small triangle to get the total area to be planted.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

Yes, I'm aware of this.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

But like, 16, 12, 20 ft are the measurements. i still don't understand completely.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

Base height?

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

Same for the big triangle.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Ignore the 20 feet dimension as it is the length of the hypotenuse of the smaller triangle which you won't need. You can choose either length to be the base or the height and you ill get the same answer as it would not matter in a right triangle. 1/2 * 16 * 12 is same as 1/2 * 12 * 16

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

what's a right triangle? lol (deadsrs)

OpenStudy (ranga):

A triangle that has a 90 degree angle.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

also what's a hypotenuse

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

ah

OpenStudy (ranga):

The side opposite to the 90 degree angle is the hypotenuse.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

What is the square in the triangle?

OpenStudy (ranga):

That indicates a 90 degree angle.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

How would you measure that with a protractor?

OpenStudy (ranga):

Yes. But you don't have to. They tell you it is a 90 degree angle.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

How do they tell you it's a 90 degree angle (these questions are serious I really don't know)

OpenStudy (ranga):

I just told you. That little square marking at the corner indicates it is a 90 degree angle.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

So then, the big triangle is right angle, and it's a 90 degree angle also?

OpenStudy (ranga):

Both triangles have a 90 degree angle which makes both a right triangle.

OpenStudy (ranga):

I have to go now but be careful with the units here. Some of the lengths have an "m" next to them meaning meters. Some have "ft" next to them meaning feet. Convert every length to feet before finding the areas.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

Ahh thank you so much I understand everything now :D bye .

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

Without the information you told me that I didn't know I wouldn't have been able to answer the question, right?

OpenStudy (ranga):

You are welcome. If you need unit conversion factors type meter in feet in Google and it will tell you the factor. It would have been hard without this info.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

yah, I agree with u the book that I'm doing didn't teach me that info that you have taught me, I guess I was just suppose to know it, like the prerequisites.
