OpenStudy (happpily):

What is the function of the capillaries that surround the alveoli?

OpenStudy (somy):

Gas exchange Capillaries come close to alveoli and depending on partial pressure of Oxygen and Carbon dioxide gas exchange occurs. If the partial pressure of O2 is less in capillary then O2 will diffuse from alveoli (from high concentration to low, down the concentration gradient) to capillary and simultaneously CO2 from capillary will diffuse to alveoli (again down the concentration gradient because CO2 is less in alveoli) Because capillaries are very small their main function is to take Oxygen and nutrients to tissues as close as possible (because RBC is too big to get close to tissues)
