What is one piece of equipment that should be used, if possible, for panoramic photography (in addition to the camera)? Why?

A tripod

Yups Maddi is right. Tripod is one of the main equipment that is required to get a perfect panoramic shot. You may also need lightroom or photoshop in case your camera doesn't support panoramic mode.
OpenStudy (mathmate):
You also want a tripod with a good built-in level, or a level attached to it.
