Pleas help ill give medal!!! What problems would you expect to observe in an ecosystem without secondary consumers? Explain in 3 to 5 sentences.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First, what is your understanding of what secondary consumers are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm that they take after the primary consumers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...Ok. In a food pyramid, there are Primary Producers which are things like grass. Then there are Primary Consumers which are things like mice, they eat the grass. Next is the Secondary Consumers which are things like snakes which eat the mice. Finally, on top of the Secondary Consumers there are Tertiary Consumers which, following this, is something like a hawk, they eat the snakes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if there were no Secondary Consumers what do you think would happen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nothing because the hawks could just eat the mice right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Possibly yes. But the hawks wouldn't just eat one mouse. The hawks would need to eat more than one to make up for that snake. If the mice were being eaten extremely fast, possibly faster than they can reproduce what would happen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There would be no more food for the hawks so they could die from hunger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes and there would be nothing eating the Primary Producers either.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So overpopulation could happen because if the hawks aren't in the picture then the mice could be overproduced. Scarce food sources would also be a problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok thanks that really helped.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem
