What is the purpose of a cow 'sitting quietly chewing'?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

it is called rumination... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruminant

OpenStudy (paki):

an animal (such as a cow or sheep) that swallows food and then brings it back up again to continue chewing it for good digestion and this is due to this reason that the stomach of these has an absorption function in addition to the usual functions of mastication and acidification.... @fishy13

OpenStudy (somy):

As the cow eats food, the food is not directly digested (as in us), instead the food is partially digested (mechanical digestion when the cow chews the food as it is eating) and then it is stored in the stomach of the cow (atm bacteria in the stomach start digesting the parts of the food that cow cannot digest on its own) so then when the cow is don eating, after few hours she just sits down and starts chewing again - this is what we see actually the food that a cow ate few hours ago, the cow basically saying vomits it to its mouth and then chews it again and this time food is digested completely

OpenStudy (paki):

don't say that the cow is QUITE, so it may be thinking :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (paki):
