OpenStudy (smartsass):

Which of the following situations is high in potential energy? 1. water at the bottom if a dam 2. 2 magnetic poles far apart 3. diver at the top of his dive 4. anchor at the bottom of the sea I will give metals. I think the answer is 3, but I'm not sure.

OpenStudy (theeric):

Why do you suggest that it is 3?

OpenStudy (smartsass):

because if he's at the bottom then kinetic energy is high potential energy is low

OpenStudy (theeric):

That is true! :)

OpenStudy (smartsass):

it wouldn't be 1 or 4 but I have no clue about 2

OpenStudy (theeric):

Okay! I would take this to be two pairs of magnetic poles far apart. I don't know of a potential energy in intro physics associated with one magnet. Do you know about work? Do you know that potential energy is like the work that could be done by that force? Like, for the diver. The higher up the diver is, the more work can be done by gravity, since the distance is larger.

OpenStudy (theeric):

I guess it would have to be two poles, though :)

OpenStudy (theeric):

I have to go. You give that some thought!

OpenStudy (smartsass):

thanks so much
