because if he's at the bottom then kinetic energy is high potential energy is low

Okay! I would take this to be two pairs of magnetic poles far apart. I don't know of a potential energy in intro physics associated with one magnet.

Do you know that potential energy is like the work that could be done by that force?
Like, for the diver. The higher up the diver is, the more work can be done by gravity, since the distance is larger.
