In glycolysis several biosynthetic intermediates are produced from the D-Glucose monomer. Some are split into two 3-carbon sugars called pyruvate and transported to the tricarboxylic acid cycle where they are added onto the oxaloacetate carrier where electrons are slowly stripped off and given to NAD+. Here each pyruvate+ oxaloacetate will lose 3 carbons in the form of CO2, thus one sugar=6CO2. The NADH will deliver the electrons to the Electron transport chain where they will be passed between quinones and cytochromes of increasing electronegativity to drive proton exchange out of the mitochondrion matrix. As Hydrogens move down their electrochemical gradient back into the mitochondrion they pass through the ATPase which binds phosphates to ADP's (1.5 per 2 protons). These ATP's are energetically unstable and therefore can be used to drive conformational changes in proteins around the cell and act as a form of energy currency for the cell.
