Why was the Glorious Revolution in England unusual in comparison to political developments in France, Spain, and Russia? (5 points) While the French, Spanish, and Russian monarchies were becoming more absolute, the Glorious Revolution created a limited monarchy. The Glorious Revolution is the only instance in which the line of succession of a monarchy was altered by warfare. Unlike most revolutions, one monarch willingly ceded power to another monarch. The Glorious Revolution resulted in an elected republic, unique in Europe at the time.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

The Glorious Revolution was a negotiated invasion of England in 1688. William of Orange was assured the support of key English leaders. One Bishop and six noblemen, known as the Immortal Seven invited William to invade and replace James II. Background: England suffered religious persecution of Catholics and Protestants in turn throughout most of the 1600s. Each new monarch seemed to switch persecution to the other group. They beheaded Catholic Charles I in 1649 and tried going kingless. They got the Puritan dictatorship of Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell's son tried to take power and the power players thought it was time to go back to with Charles II and then his brother James II. Charles II and James II were both Catholic but seemed to leave Aglicans and other protestants alone. But things changed. Among other things James had some Anglican Bishop's imprisoned in the Tower of London. Then James changed the line of succession. His daughter Mary would have become Queen but he changed it so his Catholic son, also named James. Mary, the protestant daughter, was living in Holland with her husband William of Orange. That's why it was William who was invited to end James II monarchy. William invaded. There was some opposition, but he was named regent by Parliament and James fled the country. William's public relations people put out the slogan that William was a Stuart without the debauchery, absolutism and catholicism of his relatives. Mary was called over. They wanted to make her king, but she would only consent if the made William the King. So the got King William III and Mary II. As part of the deal, the Church of England was made the official religion of England and every monarch since has been the head of that church. William and Mary also agreed to the English Bill of Rights and other limits on their power.
