A bar of 24-karat (pure) gold is supposed to be completely solid. To check this, a scientist takes the bar into the lab. Using a scale, she finds that it has a weight of 9.8 N and an apparent weight of only 9.1 N when completely immersed in water. Is the bar solid?

OpenStudy (gebooors):

Mass of gold bar is W/g = 1.0 kg In water it's weight is smaller because of lift of water N. Volume of gold bar can be calculated from lift, because lift is Equal to weight of displaced volume of water. Mass of water m= N/g. Now, calculate density of gold bar.
