What happened as a result of the Second Great Awakening? People started questioning the British monarchy’s rule. There was a dramatic increase in church membership. People began to question the importance of religion. Thousands of people converted to Catholicism.

The second great awakening was a religious revival in America during the 1820's and 30's. The Second Great Awakening was during the 1830's and came after massive change in the economy and popular alcoholism. Canals and railways revolutionized the economy and decreased the amount of subsistence farming. Also, people drank alcohol like crazy because it was the safer than water or milk. The effects of the stress of settler life combined with chronic drunkenness were abhorrent to the religious. This resulted in people trying to reform and create utopian societies that would remove them from the overwhelming changes in the market and alcoholism.
