Arithmetic means you're adding numbers each time. The series 1,2,3,4 would have a common difference of 1 because 1+1=2 and 2+1=3 and so on. Geometric means that you're multiplying by the same number each time. 1,3,9,27 would be an example. 1*3=3, 3*3=9, 9*3=27 and so on.
