REASONS TO GET INVOLVED:

1. Germany destroyed American ships

Lufthanasia was a good example. The ship was sunk as a part of a German Submarine Offensive Campaign with the lost of over 100 American civilians. This angered the American public because Germany killed innocent American citizens, and this was considered an attack on America itself.

2. Zimmerman Telegram

Germany decided to take it one step further and asked Mexico to join in. Mexico then was still in a state of quasi-anarchy. However, the Mexican government wanted to "reclaim" Texas, which was just lost. The Zimmerman Telegram wanted Mexico to join and in return, they claimed that they would take Texas for Mexico. When this was delivered to American Representatives by British decoders, it acted as a cause to go to war.

So yes, the US should have gone to war against the Fritz :)

zimmerman and sinking were all good reasons. from a personal standpoint wwi was largely useless. but in the terms of national interests, it was a better time than ever. america ensures victory by overwhelming germany and solidifies its power as the strongest in the world even if nobody in the world knew it at the time. After wwii, it became obvious.
