OpenStudy (linn99123):

What is the area of the figure? A. 360 in2 B. 282 in2 C. 126 in2 D. 240 in2 http://static.k12.com/calms_media/media/1338500_1339000/1338562/1/e74765763c688d9292589627b399eb8aa1932eac/143749.jpg @sammixboo

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Have you considered extending the vertical lines until they hit the baseline?

OpenStudy (linn99123):

no i havent :o

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Seems like it could lead somewhere useful.

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Yes.

OpenStudy (linn99123):

I picked C but i think its wrong

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Why do you care what you THINK? Prove it one way or the other. What did you do? What were you thinking? What deliberate mistakes did you make along the way?

OpenStudy (linn99123):

i cant i have like 2 mins to get 4 questions done D:

OpenStudy (linn99123):

im freaking out same

OpenStudy (linn99123):

sam*

sammixboo (sammixboo):

It is C

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

wtf no it's not it's b

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

It's a composite shape, you must divide it into 2 shapes.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

then find the area of both shapes and add it up.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Just cut off the odd 7-piece. This leaves you with a rectangle that is 12 x 20. This is easily calculated to 240. So, the complete answer MUST be at least 240. Give it another go.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

wtf? I see it as 282 i may be doing it wrong though

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

282 is at least 240. There is no disagreement.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

first make 2 shapes.

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

|dw:1399089337744:dw|

OpenStudy (mindblast3r):

area = LXW for rectangles 7x18 = 126 12 x 13 = 156 156 + 126 = 282in2
