After conducting your research, answer the questions below. You will need to conduct some library or Web research on sea otters, kelp forests, and sea urchins. Find out how sea otters affect sea urchins and how this affects kelp forests. To carry out your research, you may use keywords such as "sea otters and kelp forests" or "sea otters and urchins." Here are a few Web sites you may also take a look at. Friends of the Sea Otter The Western Ecological Research Center The Otter Project As you go through your research materials, keep an eye out for the following information: Why did sea otters almost completely die out (become extinct) in the 1800s and early 1900s? What are some things that sea otters eat? Do sea otters use tools? How are sea urchins and kelp forests connected? What happens to kelp forests when sea urchins are not present in the ecosystem?
