what is the difference between emf and potential difference?
both r voltage differennce
Well EMF = electro motive force, is something that makes ur electron move.. The name was actually coined even before we had a clear understanding of energies and potentials involved. Its measured in volt iself.. potential difference is more general term .. if there is a current flowing from A to B, u know for sure that there is a potential difference between A to B .. No arguments We usually use the word EMF when that potential difference is PROVIDED BY SOME SOURCE.. like say a battery EMF is also potential difference.. for battery, the EMF is the potential difference between the ends of the electrode (of course when u are not drawing any current from it) So it makes sense ot say.. "hey whats the emf of the battery?" that means "what is the potential difference between the terminals of that battery It doesn't make sense to say.. "hey what is the emf between two points A and B?" instead we use "hey what is the potential difference between points A and B?" so u see Potential difference is a general term that we use, and EMF is a term we used when someone is PROVIDING a source I could tell u another huge difference.. but that depends on whether you have learnt about faraday's laws of induction in detail or what level of physics u are talking about (have you heard of conservative and non conservative fields?.. if no.. the forget about this paragraph.. the rest above it enough :D :D )
