What equation results from completing the square and then factoring? x^2 + 24x = 33

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My possible choices .. I'm thinking it's C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true me to thats wat i think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol srry thats what i think to c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think B :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um i think c like idk who's right but...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's (x+12)^2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its x^2 + 24x + 144 , right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

144 yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and to complete the original square we had to add 144 or 12^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guess you need to try and multiply (x+12)(x+12) by hand to learn why, know how to do that @Johnny621 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahahaha ok here is how...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ur pretty nice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1st term from 1st bracket times 1st term from 2nd bracker , i.e. x * x + 1st term from 1st bracket times 2nd term from 2nd bracker , i.e. x * 12 + 2nd term from 1st bracket times 1st term from 2nd bracker , i.e. 12 * x + 2nd term from 1st bracket times 2nd term from 2nd bracker , i.e. 12 * 12 QED :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it'd be (x+12)^2=177?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Was your answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You were correct again math wiz! I can't thank you enough.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but really @Johnny621 you need to follow the above 4 steps and do that more often so you learn how to work out these exercises , you'll get smarter like that , ok :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no worries buddy :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

glad u got it
