how is a circle defined?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

I'm not sure...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really? you should have a look... http://www.mathopenref.com/circle.html

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

@experimentX can you help? i think the answer is x2 + (y + 2)2 = 3 . I'm not sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know the distance formula?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a circle is the set of points that is equidistant from a given point. the "given" point is the center.

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

OK...but I am just wondering if my answer is correct. I don't want to get it wrong :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if you know the center point, then the other points are (x, y) and then you use the distance formula to write the equation. what is the center of your circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you want to learn or just get the answer right?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

(3, 2) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great!!! so (3, 2) is not the center, though. have a look again. *Hint, hint, wink wink... it's the red point.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you still there?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

@pgpilot326 sorry i was eating breakfast. and the center point is (0, -2)

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

@pgpilot326 are you there?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):
