What was the purpose of D-Day? to launch a surprise invasion of Europe from southern Italy to encourage the Soviet Union to continue fighting on the Eastern Front to reclaim Western Europe first before attempting to move Allied troops into Germany to establish a stronghold on Germany's northern coast

to establish a stronghold on Germany's nothern coast. D-Day was the big invasion of Europe, to gain a foothold. It was for the Allies to land onto Continental Europe to push the Germans back into Germany. This offensive was necessary since the war on the Westenr were at that time confined to commando raids on German held Europe and day/night air raids. Allied forces were massed in Great Britain as the staging point and D Day had to be effected to relieve pressure for the Soviets on the Eastern front.
