See it like this y=-(x-2)(x+3) Act like the negative isn't there for right now So FOIL it x*x=x^2 x*3=3x -2*x=-2x -2*3=-6 x^2+3x-2x-6= x^2+x-6 Now let's bring that negative back -(x^2+x-6) After the negative sign there's an imaginary 1 so -1*x^2=-x^2 -1*x=-x -1*-6=6 So you get -x^2-x+6
