Thanks, that's really kind.  The first part of the assignment was to create pseudocode to solve the problem.  I didn't grasp the specification so well so my pseudocode wasn't up to scratch.  To code the solution I'm using the provided pseudocode and the associated explanation, which don't make much sense to me.  However I've "taken their word for it" that the pseudocode will work and have started coding based on faith.  I'm attaching the pseudocode / conceptual solution and my function so far.
