Concrete must be purchased by the cubic yard. How much will it cost to pour a slab of pavement 11 feet by 11 feet by 3 inches for a patio if the concrete costs $63.00 per cubic yard?

OpenStudy (ranga):

Convert each dimension in 11 ft x 11 ft x 3 into yards. Multiply them to find the total volume in cubic yards and then multiply by $63 to find the total cost.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ranga I'm about to sound really dumb but how do you convert feet into yards? It's been a while since I've done that.

OpenStudy (ranga):

1 yard = 3 feet Divide no. of feet by 3 to convert to yards.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So divide 11/3 ? and then what about the three inches?

OpenStudy (ranga):

1 yard = 3 feet 1 foot = 12 inches Therefore, 1 yard = 36 inches. Divide no. of inches by 36 to convert into yards. Also, if you want to find out the conversion factor, then in Google you can type; yard in inches inches in yards feet in yards etc. to get the conversion factors.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. So I did all that and my answer wasn't one of the options given.

OpenStudy (ranga):

what is the answer you got from the calculations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I got 3.66 yd x 3.66 yd x 0.08 yd. I then multiplied by $63 and got 466.20

OpenStudy (ranga):

Error in multiplication. check again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What did I do wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just plugged it in again and it said the same thing.

OpenStudy (ranga):

I multiply the same four numbers and get a very different result than yours.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really? Hmm. Let me try again

OpenStudy (ranga):

Also, to avoid rounding off errors, I'd wait until the end to round off. 11/3 * 11/3 * 3/36 * 63 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oohhhh wait I see what I did wrong! I added instead of multiplied. Oops haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So for my new answer I got $70.58

OpenStudy (ranga):

That is what I got. Does it match any of the answer choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep

OpenStudy (ranga):

alright.
