Solve: |x - 3| < 8 A. -8 < x < 11 B. x < -5 and x > 11 C. x < 8 D. -5 < x < 11

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The rule is if |x| < k, for some positive number k, then -k < x < k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is absolute value which means that |x-3| is really |x+3| < 8 so then solve for x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So that means |x - 3| < 8 turns into -8 < x - 3 < 8
