What is the surface area of the right prism given below?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Notice that it has 2 triangles, and 3 rectangles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes o:

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Also notice that the 2 triangles are congruent (identical)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so start by calculating the area of one triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I notice, there bases, correct?;o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i'll solve that hold up

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

no lol, a prism always has only 2 bases

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the triangles are the bases..

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

okay, find the area of triangle. .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats why the triangles are the bases (x

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Area of 1 trianlge is 30?;O

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Correct !

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

since we have two bases, area of bases = 30 + 30 = 60

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

next find the lateral area (rectangles)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

finding area of bottom rectangle should be easy : length = 14 width = 12 Area = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

14?:o

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Area of rectangle = (length) x (width)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! ok waitt 60 x 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

840

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

forget about area of triangles for now, we're done wid that.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

finding area of bottom rectangle should be easy : length = 14 width = 12 Area = 14 * 12 = 168

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

next, find the area of left rectangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 x 14?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Yes !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

70

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes, next.. what about the slanted rectangle ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

14x12?:o i'm not sure about that one

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good try, but no

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its length is 14, correct

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

but we dont knw its width yet

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

we need to find it first

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

look at the figure again, notice that its width is same as the `hypotenuse` of base triangle

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

apply pythagora and find it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a^2+b^2=c^2 ?:o

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yess

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5^2+12^2=c^2 25+144=c^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

169=c^2

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Excellent ! take `square root` and find out c all the way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats a big #, did it wrong ._.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh okay okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c^2 = 13 :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 14x13?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Correct !

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

So the surface area of given prism is : Base area + lateral area

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

just add up all the areas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Base Area: 60 Lateral Area is 60 * 14 = 840 Surface Area: 900 ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

nope

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Base Area: 60 Lateral Area is : 168 + 70 + 182 Surface Area: ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

480?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow, idk why i made this so difficult lol i looked through and saw what i kept missing (x Thankyouxx very much!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

total surface area = 480 is correct !

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good job :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

there is a simple formula for finding lateral area : lateral area = (perimeter of base) * (height) = (5+12+13) * (14) = 30 * 14 = 420

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

add to it the base areas : 420 +60 you wud get the same answer : 480
