Astronomers have shown that the planets circle the sun in a(n) _______ path. A. circular B. elliptical C. hyperbolic D. parabolic E. none of the above

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is A correct?

hero (hero):

Have you considered that the planet's path might not be completely circular?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No not really.. Lol okay so its not A. How bout C?

hero (hero):

Why'd you skip B? http://bit.ly/1uonhL6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Woah... What was that???? OKAY so its B?

hero (hero):

You've never heard of lmgtfy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No planet could have a hyperbolic or parabolic path. Reason behind it: infinite distance from star at some point The ideal planet might have a circular path but most are elliptical because most planets are not ideal and the gravity of the star and planet plays a role in the elliptical path. Thus the choice is B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you caters for that explanation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But the planets here in the solar system do have elliptical paths with ours being near circular but not quite. Also there is no way that a planet can somehow be infinitely away from its sun and all other stars because even if it is miles or light years away there is always at least 1 star in the parabola or hyperbola.
