Find all local extrema for f(x)=x^3-12x-1

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

i'm not sure what you mean by extrema local maxima and minima?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

ok first find the derivative of the function and equate it to zero/ can u do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. I believe i have already calculated the answer

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

3x^2 - 12 = 0 x^2 = 4 x = -2 , 2 so plug these in to the function to find value of f(x) these are the 2 extrema points

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

now find the nature of the 2 points by finding the sing of the second derivative

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

* sign
