This exert could possibly mean that the pickers are depressed or tired of their life style that they are living. Maybe they are tired of being sad and want to do something else for a change. You will never know how they feel or why they were depressed. Then the other reason I think that they were sad and tired and didn’t care to live anymore. I would be too if I was a dirt picker or whatever they were. I would want something more exciting to do.
