Firstly, the cigarette butts release toxic chemicals into the water system and that hurts aquatic life as well as getting into the water systems where we swim, fish, etc. The butts can also cause wildfires, endangering many lives and destroying land. They are also not biodegradable, meaning they do not rot back into soil but remain polluting the earth for a very long time. DDT, Methyl Bromide and Aldrin are often sprayed on the tobacco plant to prevent disease or insect damage to the plant. These are awful for human consumption and are found in the smoke that comes from a cigarette. There are two kinds of smoke, mainstream (when someone smoking exhales and pollutes the air) and sidestream (directly from a lit cigarette). Sidestream smoke tends to have a higher concentration chemical . These are KNOWN to be EXTREMELY detrimental to the ozone layer. All cigarette smoke is classified as a Type A carcinogen, lumped in with arsenic and asbestos. This means it has been PROVEN to be toxic and cause cancer IN HUMANS. One Italian study showed that cigarette smoke is more pollutant to the air than 10 DIESEL TRUCKS!!!
