Probably the Cuban Missile Crisis. A U2 pilot was shot down over Cuba and the embargo that Kennedy put into place around the island nation with the Navy forced Soviet ships to either stop or turn around. Soviet subs were also in the area making for an extremely tense situation on both sides.
