Determine whether the equation defines y as a linear function of x. If so, write it in the form y = mx + b. 8x = 5y + 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got y = 8/5x - 9/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but one of the multiple choices is that it is not linear

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, it is linear. I will try to explain the best I can. So we have: \[y=\frac{ 8 }{ 5 }x-\frac{ 9 }{ 5 }\] So if we give the numer one to x, y would be -1/5. If we give 2 to x, y would be 7/5 and if we give 3 to x, y would be 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Every time you give a increasing number you would increase 8/5. So it is proportional. Or you could do it by a graph, it is a better visual way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is called proportionality
