Centrifugal force increases with _______________.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The centrifugal force increase when the mass increases, the angular velocity increases or the radius increases. Becasuse \[F _{c}=mw ^{2}r\]

OpenStudy (mrnood):

There is no such thing as centrifugal force. IF your text or teacher is telling you so then find a GOOD text and learn from that. In order for a body to travel in a circular path (or any curve) it must experience a force TOWARDS the centre of the circle. This is known as CENTRIPETAL force. @charliealbert has the correct equation, but this is for the force TOWARDS the centre of the circle. This is a fundamental concept so PLEASE make an effort to understand it. It will make your understanding of many dynamics issues clearer. Acceleration in a circular path is towards the centre, and caused by a force acting towards the centre, i.e. centripetal force.

@MrNood Although you are right, u get a real good intuition sometimes in thinking about centrifugal (pseudo force.. basically your inertia)why we talk about that? CAUSE U CAN FEEL IT.. Feeling is believing right?! When you hurl a bucket of water vertically, and the water doesn't fall at the top, if you think in terms of centrifugal force .. it really makes a lot of sense in your bones!!. that is the reason some teachers and some textbooks do introduce that concept.. But yes.. its important to note, that in reality there isn't any force like so.. its just what we FEEL.. but like i said, its more intuitive to think in that term! (also helps to understand why strings get taut and tension force gets set up.. if you think in this manner of inertial push away from center)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what i say is think this way if u are in a bus and the bus accelerates forward.. then u feel a backward push.. and so.. you can now say "AHHHHAAA.. i feel a backward push, which means, i am accelerating FORWARD, which means in reality someone is pushing me FORWARD" when the bus brakes.. you feel a push forward .. and you can say " AHHAA... what this means, is that since i feel a push forward, there must be an acceleration backward, which means someone is really pushing me backwards" now i can extend this .. so if you are going in a circular motion.. you would feel pushed away from the center (radially).. that makes the string taut.. (if you are hanging by the string), that makes u stay on the roller coaster and not fall when u are the top .. cause u are really pushed away from the center and so u are forced towards the seats.. and so you can now say "AHHAA.. since i feel a push AWAYYY from the centre.. i must be accelerating TOWARDS THE CENTER.. thus in reality someone is actually pushing me TOWARDS THE CENTER.. ergo.. the centripetal force"

OpenStudy (mrnood):

I strongly disagree Strings do not get taut because of the centrifugal force - thing go araoun BECAUSE of the tension It is the force that causes the motion, not the motion that causes the force (in classical terms anyhow). If you draw a free body diagram - which is the KEY to dynamics problems at this level there is NO centrifugal force and to even acknowledge it as an aid is confusing and distracting. I can't argue more strongly than to say it does not exist and the free body diagram is the correct approach to this subject.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

Newton's first law-- Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. A body will NOT go in a circular path UNLESS the force acts upon it. The acceleration is TOWARDS the centre - BECAUSE the force is towards the centre

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes i am not saying, that centrifugal force is real i m saying YOU FEEELLLLLL ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT when the bus SLAMMSSS on the brakes.. you fall FORWARD.. is there anyone PUSHING U FORWARD?? OFCOURSEEE NOTTTTTTTTTTTT NO ONE IS PUSHING U FORWARDDDDDDDDDDDD then WHY THE HECK DO YOU FALL FORWARD??!?!? inertial right?! that is called as INERTIAL PUSH!.. yes ITS NOT A TRUE FORCE.. but like i said.. since u FEEL it.. its important to talk about it!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Strings do not get taut because of the centrifugal force - thing go araoun BECAUSE of the tension" Tension gets set up BECAUSE OF INERTIA!!!! RIGHT?!? if the object has more mass, then more inertia and more tension!.. centrifugal force is really a concept of inertial push!!.. When u are accelerating, u are in NON INERTIAL FRAME OF REFERENCE, and thus NEWTONS 1st LAW IS INVALID.. if you wanna be so technical about it :P

Nuff said

ok :P..
