red cube has 6 different outcomes, blue cube has 6 different outcomes. together, they have 6*6 = 36 different outcomes.

now what are the outcomes where sum of number is 6? let me write those outcomes down (R is red cube, B is blue cube)

as you can see, five outcomes.
