5sqrt2+sqrt18

mathslover (mathslover):

Hello Bella, welcome to OpenStudy! In order to simplify the given expression - Let us first factor out 18 . Can you do write 18 in terms of 2 ? Like 18 = 2 * x , what is x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello, I am lost, please help.

mathslover (mathslover):

Okay, can you tell me what is 9 * 2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

18

mathslover (mathslover):

Right, so I will write the expression as: \(5\sqrt{2} + \sqrt{9 * 2} \) Okay?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay.

mathslover (mathslover):

So, 9 can be written as \(3 \times 3\) or \(3^2\) So, \(5\sqrt{2} + \sqrt{3^2 \times 2}\) 3 will come out from the square root and the expression will become : \(5\sqrt{2} + 3\sqrt{2}\)

mathslover (mathslover):

Now, we can take \(\sqrt{2}\) common : \(\sqrt{2}(5 + 3) = 8\sqrt{2}\)
