Disruptive, directional, and stabilizing. Disruptive leads to niche specialization and eventual speciation.  Directional moves the distribution of a trait in a particular direction but does not result in speciation.  Stabilizing purges the extremes and leaves only the averages of a trait.

Disruptive increases variation
Directional may increase, but more correctly simply shifts the distribution of the trait
Stabilizing (or purifying) decreases variation and is thought to be involved in a lot of species specialization
