Describe the water that is most likely to float on the surface of the ocean. A. warm water with low salt content B. cold, salty water C. warm water with high salt content D. cold water with no salt

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. Saltwater is denser than freshwater. You can actually stack layers of colored water that have different salt conc. if you are really careful. I've done it a few times for students. It is really cool.

COOL thank u sir

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, crap. It is D !mathlover2014. Sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathlover2014 It is D, sorry I missed the no salt in that answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so it is cold water with no salt?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mrdoldum so it is cold water with no salt ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathlover2014 Yes, temp is important, but not nearly as important as salt in relation to water density.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh cool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In fact, water will sink as it cools until a certain point. If I recall correctly this is around 39 F. As the temp gets lower than that water actually begins to expand and becomes less dense. This is why ice floats, which we should all be thankful for. If ice didn't float than all water on earth would likely freeze solid and life would have probably never evolved past small single celled things.

cool this is very interesting i love to learn
