The topic I wanted to talk today and that is dear to my heart is the Amazon rainforest. Firstly, I think it is important to present it properly, since it is very important for the proper functioning of our planet. For some people, it is the lungs of the earth. For me, I think it is much more than a forest. The Amazon rainforest is one of the most important reservoirs of biodiversity in the world, including insects, vertebrates and plants. It represents more than half of the world's tropical forests. As the largest region of America moist rainforest, animal or plant species in ten in the world live in the Amazon rainforest. In addition, since it is a wet area with lots of plants, it helps make the air of our planet better, and causes rain, preventing land desertification. In short, it is very important in various areas of the planet. However, it is threatened by deforestation and this is what alarms me. Indeed, since 1970 , nearly 18 % of the original forest has disappeared due to deforestation and human activities, which is huge if you think about the size of this forest, which at the time was over 7 3 million km ². In addition, contrary to what many people think, soils in the Amazon are relatively poor. The majority of non-flooded Amazonian lands are very fertile. So when there is trauma to the land, such as human activity, soils accumulate waste and ashes. This results in a washing of soil nutrients. It thus becomes empty, and nothing grows there anymore. The place will simply become a desert. In addition to all this, the climate impact is felt more strongly, since there are more and more desert. Finally, we tend to forget, but most of the world's forests are of great service to man. With their roots, trees are used for soil conservation, in the fight against avalanches and landslides, stabilization of sand dunes and the protection of coastal areas . Deprive forest, is to deny all these valuable services. I could name many other consequences of those practices, but I'll stop there. I think we all have an awareness of what is happening now in the Amazon, and whether it is really worth it, because ultimately, it is the forests that sustain us, not the money it can bring to us.
