Civil rights and Immigration were at the top of his Domestic list. However the Vietnam War was at the forefront of his mind.

I don't know what all is in your lesson but here is my take. Feel free to use my word. Lyndon Johnson was the consummate deal maker in Congress. In fact, that's part of why Kennedy put him on the ticket as VP, to get him out of Congress so Kennedy could pursue his own agenda. From that stand point, LBJ was one of the best prepared presidents as far as domestic policy is concerned. His whole legisislative carrer was spent on domestic policy. Johnson's Great Society transformed American's relationship with the Federal government. I won't list all the programs, you should have them in your materieal. Working together, the programs sought to improve the lives of poor people, sick and disabled people, the environment and inner cities. He also advanced civil rights especcially voting rights. His biggest domestic failure related to his foreign policy failure. He changed the policy toward Vietnam from Kennedy and Eisenhower's support and advise role to a direct involvement role. He felt the need to go all out and committ troops to contain Communism in a direct way. The disasterous Vietnam policy became increasingly unpopular domestically in the US. Riots, protests and social instability plaqued his first full term and forced him to not seek election for a second full term.
