Algebra.  Why not pick a letter of the alphabet to represent the number of hot dogs purchased and another letter to repr. the number of soft drinks purchased?  

Let d = # of hot dogs purchased
Let s = # of soft drinks purchased

Your goal is to find the values of s and d and to combine them into one $ amount to answer this question.
