How did Congress approach Reconstruction after the Civil War?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Congress was controlled by the Radical Republicans during Reconstruction. They had been ardent abolitionists before the war. Congress took control of the country after the war. President Johnson's impeachment trial shows that the Executive branch was ineffective against their power. The abolitionist Radicals converted to civil rights advocates and sought to punish former Confederates. Accomplishments during Congressional Reconstruction: 13th, 14th, 15th amendments to the Constitution. Together the amendments sought to extend "the blessings of Liberty" to all Americans. The Freedman's Bureau was another significant achievement. They also succeeded in keeping ex-Confederates out of power for nearly 10 years.
