Help..

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

\[2x-1\le3x-5\le x+9\]

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

@johnweldon1993

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Alright so your overall goal here...is to solve for 'x' \[\large 2x - 1 \le \color \red{3x - 5} \le x + 9\] We want to focus on getting that down to just 'x' so how can we do that?

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Add 5 to both sides.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well...we know that 5 is being subtracted from the 'x'....so how about we add 5 to everything in this equation *because remember..what you do to 1 side...you have to do to the other(s) \[\large 2x - 1 \color \red{+ 5} \le 3x - 5 \color \red{+ 5} \le x + 9 \color \red{+ 5}\] what do you have after doing that?

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Ok. I got \[2x+4\le3x \le1x+14\] Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve taking first two and then last two and finally write in the form \[a \le x \le b , where~ a~ and~b~are~real~numbers.\]

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

I don't know...wait..I'm kind of confused......How solve for the first two...then i will solve the last 2. and tell me if im right...but show me how to do the first...2..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2x-1 \le 3 x-5,2x-1+5\le 3x-5+5\] \[2 x+4 \le 3x,2x+4-2 x \le 3x-2x\] \[4 \le x\] similarly take last two and solve.

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

I don't really know how you did it... my original problem is \[2x-1\le 3x-5\le 1x+9\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[3 x-5 \le 1x+9\] add 5 \[3x-5+5 \le 1x+9+5\] \[3x \le 1x+14\] \[3 x-1 x \le 1 x+14-1 x\] \[2 x \le 14\] divide by 2 \[x \le 7\] combining \[4 \le x \le 7 \]

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Where did you get 4 from?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He got the 4 from the work he did on the first two sides of the inequality (the left and the middle)...look at his post above his last post... The trick is to work these in pairs...then put the two "halves" back together at the end...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So he started out by solving \[2x-1\le 3x-5\] and then solved \[3x-5\le x+9\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once he got each of these, he put the answers back together into a single inequality...

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

So..is that the answer? Or there's more to it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope...no more than that...as long as you understand what he did..

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

I actually don't.....I feel like i'm in jupiter...(I'm serious)....Like a lost dog...this is the thing that i hate...(someone starts helping you and then they go offline....) And then someone else helps you and tries to explain it to you..And then your like...uuu..idk...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol...ok...then let's get you to understand...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you understand what i said about taking them in pairs?

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

Before umm...you help me...I'll just post the same question....cuz...this is wierd..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok
