The figure in question is a rectangle. What is the length of this rectangle? the width? Please type out the formula for "perimeter." P = ?? + ??
The formula for perimeter of a rectangle is: P = 2L + 2W.
Can you now write the formula for the perimeter of this rectangle? Equate your formula to the given 224 units. Can you now solve this equation for y? Once yoiu have y, you can say what the length and the width of your rectangle are, as numerals.
Great! Take a look at the rectangle again. What is the length? What is the width? Substitute those into your formula P = 2W + 2L.
The length is 4y + 1 and the width is 5y + 3

Great! Take a look at the rectangle again. What is the length? What is the width? Substitute those into your formula P = 2W + 2L. As you say, The length is 4y + 1 and the width is 5y + 3. Since P = 2L + 2W, and since the given perimeter is 224 units, set up this equation: P = 224 units = 2 (length) + 2 (width) Simplify your result. You should be able to solve it for y. Then, write out L: L=4( y ) + 1 = side CD W: W=5 ( y ) + 3 and you'll then have your answers.
I'm so sorry i'm lost, I still do not understand.
so the way i solve the perimeter formula is P= 2(L + W) does that help a bit?
