y = (x - 2)/(x + 4) state the domain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay Do you know definition of domain ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question says state the domain of this rational question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So can you first tell me at which value of x this function is undefined ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A) (-∞, ∞) B) (-∞, -4) ∪ (-4, ∞) C) (-∞, 0) ∪ (0, ∞) D) (-∞, 1) ∪ (1, ∞) these are the choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(x) is undefined when denominator become zero right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes so do you know which one it would be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So at which value of x denominator become zero ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plug denominator equal to zero so x + 4 = 0 & solve for x So x = -4 So at x = -4 function become undefined .. therefore domain is all real values except -4 that is (-inf , -4)U ( -4 , inf)
