Even if you don't have a calculator, you can still do some critical thinking... For example, since the inside of cos is 4theta, you know that as theta go from 0 to 2pi, you will complete four cycles, and that means eight petals in total (four negative and four positive)

3 is just a constant, so it will not affect the shape, so there you go. Just mental guessing if the calculator is not around to save the day :)
