depending on the type of heart surgery being performed and the severity of the individuals heart it can last for several hours, usually between 3-10 hours.  There are several reasons why one might have surgery, usually because of irregular blood flow, heart disease, plaque build up or even b/c they need a transplant.

....and the scar may be there throughout ur life..:) It may fade away slowly after sometime though..:)
