Democritus came up with the concept of atoms by thinking about matter and whether it was possible to cut matter up indefinitely. Democritus was trying to think about a system of morality. He favored the existence of matter as atoms, because if it existed that way, the atoms could move in random motion, and then human beings could have free will.
