The cost of renting a van for one day includes a flat rental fee plus a charge for each mile the van is driven while it is rented. A van that is driven 107 miles costs $97.15. A van that is driven 127 miles costs $106.15. What is the flat rental fee?

the extra cost of the 20-mile difference is $9 (106.15 - 97.15) so, if $9 is charged for 20 miles, then the *per mile charge* is 9/20... Using that, you can figure out how much the 107 miles cost (at the per mile rate) and then see how much the rental fee was (the difference between the 107 mile, per rate charge and the total $97.15 cost).
